The new BMW brand SUV will come in versions with gasoline engines, plug-in hybrid setups, and exclusively electric motors (the latter will have its own name).
BMW unveiled the BMW X2 in the fall of 2017, with the basis for this compact crossover being the concept of the same name, which was presented a year earlier at the Paris Auto Show. The model will soon undergo a generational change, and the next-generation SUV will include a fully “green” version with a different name – the BMW iX2. The manufacturer has now decided to pique the interest of brand enthusiasts and has released a teaser of the upcoming innovation.
In one of the images, you can see the silhouette of the crossover with a coupe-like body and a small spoiler adorning the rear. In the second teaser, you can partially discern the “face” of the second-generation BMW X2: there are contours on the hood, traditional side mirrors, pairs of curved lines of LED daytime running lights on each side, and illuminated trim around the grille in the form of the brand’s distinctive “kidneys.”
For now, BMW continues to keep the appearance of the next-generation BMW X2 under wraps. However, last summer, spy photographers managed to capture a camouflaged prototype of the new model during road tests on public roads. We previously shared a series of photos with our readers, where the vehicle is almost entirely concealed under camouflage film, except for the side mirrors and wheel rims.
The front end of the new X2 will borrow many elements from the compact crossover BMW X1, while the fully electric version will draw inspiration from the iX1 (both debuted in early summer 2022). Judging by today’s teaser, the shape of the grille and the hood of the new model will be different, but the headlights may adopt a similar design.
Likely, the next-generation coupe-crossover’s interior, like all modern BMWs, will feature a large curved display on the front panel, combining two screens for the virtual instrument cluster and the infotainment touchscreen system.
Presumably, the related SUVs will share their engine lineup. For the current X1, the base engine is a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder (136 hp and 230 Nm). The lineup also includes a mild-hybrid setup with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and a 48-volt starter-generator (218 hp and 360 Nm). Additionally, the X1 offers a 2.0-liter diesel (150 hp and 360 Nm) and an MHEV system based on a 2.0-liter engine producing 197 hp and 400 Nm.
The X1 also offers a pair of plug-in hybrids. The first is based on a 1.5-liter engine paired with a 109-horsepower electric motor (combined power of 245 hp and 477 Nm); the second is built around a 150-horsepower engine of the same displacement with a 177-horsepower electric motor (326 hp and 477 Nm). The BMW iX1 features a dual-motor setup with a total output of 313 hp (494 Nm).
Production of the BMW X2 and iX2 will take place at the Regensburg plant in Germany, where the “ones” are also manufactured. It is expected that the new model will debut by the end of this year and reach European dealerships in 2024.
