The Mercedes-AMG One hybrid all-wheel drive supercar and its driver Maro Engel managed to significantly improve the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record: 6 min 35.183 s, more than 8 s faster than the previous record holder, the Porsche 991 GT2 RS Manthey Performance Kit.
The Mercedes-AMG One was announced in the fall of 2017, and the production version , which cost over 2.75 million euros, saw the light only last summer: after the premiere, the bosses of the German company did not hide the fact that the development of such a complex car, into which the most complex components of Formula 1 cars were literally stuffed , resulted in an absurdly expensive adventure, it was very difficult, almost impossible to bring the car to mind, and the final technical characteristics turned out to be far from record-breaking by the standards of today’s top echelon of the car market: the Mercedes-AMG One hybrid power plant based on the formula 1.6-liter V6 produces maximum 1063 hp, up to 100 km / h, the supercar accelerates in 2.9 s, the maximum speed is 352 km / h. However, the cost of maintenance the machines are literally cosmic – up to 850 thousand euros for a “session”!
At the time of its debut, many experts and wealthy car enthusiasts doubted that the Mercedes-AMG One could be really fast in the hands of a professional pilot, so the supercar needed the Nurburgring record like air. It is too hot on the track in summer, most records are set here in spring or autumn. The Mercedes-AMG One race took place on October 28 on the full length of the Nordschleife (20.832 km) under the control of the Nürburgring Directorate, the lap time is listed in the official table of records .
Recall that in 2019, the leadership of the Nurburgring undertook to streamline the process of setting records and divided all participants into 13 classes. The Mercedes-AMG One naturally fell into the supercar class and was the only one in it to try to set a record after 2019. It can also be called the fastest production road car at the Nürburgring, although there is no such category in the official record table. Porsche 991 GT2 RS Manthey Performance Kit , which passed the North Loop last year in 6 min 43.300 s (by the way, in June!), fell into the class of sports cars, that is, it is impossible to formally compare its result with the result of Mercedes-AMG One, but informally, Yes, you certainly may.
The lap time of the Mercedes-AMG One on the old, “amateur” track length (20.6 km) without the T13 section, where the start-finish line is located, is 6 minutes 30.705 seconds. At a distance of 20.6 km, records were recorded until 2019 and are recorded to this day, but unofficially, that is, without prior agreement with the circuit management, in this mode, cars on the Nordschleife roll, for example, the German magazine sport auto (as a rule, these are various hot hatches that do not claim leadership).
In the overall standings, the time of the Mercedes-AMG One is the second after the absolute track record: 5 min 19.546 s, it belongs to the sports prototype Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo and driver Timo Bernhard. The driver of the Mercedes-AMG One, Maro Engel, could have completed the lap in less than 6 min 35.183 s, but the weather conditions on the day of arrival were not ideal: some parts of the track were wet and muddy. There were several record laps during the session, but the last one turned out to be the best, on which Engel went 29 s before the track was closed.
In any case, Maro Engel and the Mercedes-AMG team are to be congratulated. We add that the record was set in an absolutely stock car, but over the settings, which the Mercedes-AMG One has a lot of, we had to conjure and find the optimal balance between speed and recuperation.
