Fifth generation Toyota Prius: new image and first details

According to preliminary data, the “five-door” of the new generation will have an installation based on a two-liter engine. The premiere is coming soon.

The silhouette of a new model appeared on Toyota’s Japanese website last Wednesday, and local media immediately suggested that a fifth-generation Prius hybrid was being prepared for its debut. A couple of days later, the company itself officially confirmed: yes, this is a Prius; At the same time, Toyota published another teaser – already with a “face”. And here is another picture: this time the feed is illuminated. Well, let us recall that the “fourth” hybrid has been in service since 2015, in 2016, a rechargeable Prius Prime with its own design joined the “regular” Prius (in Japan, such a “five-door” carries the PHV prefix). The restyling version of the HEV survived in 2018 (they did not change the appearance of the rechargeable hybrid).

Judging by the images, the Toyota Prius will remain a liftback. But the design, of course, will be different: the exterior will be made in the new corporate style of the brand, which has already been tried  on by bZ4X  and bZ3 electric cars , as well as the  latest generation Crown . Features – unusual head optics and taillights in the form of a single die (in the case of the next Prius and Crown – in the form of a thin strip).

The specifications are being kept under wraps by the manufacturer. Meanwhile, some Japanese specialized media have already given some input. So, according to unofficial data, the Prius will retain the GA-C platform, created as part of the TNGA architecture (by the way, the previous liftback was the first Toyota model based on this architecture). At the same time, the hybrid seems to become larger than its predecessor (the length of the outgoing standard Prius HEV is 4575 mm, the PHEV version is 4645 mm, the wheelbase is the same for both modifications – 2700 mm).

The most accessible Prius will allegedly be left with an aspirated 1.8-based installation (in the Japanese specification, the engine produces 98 hp). The more expensive versions, according to the Japanese, will have an installation based on a 2.0 atmospheric engine (the return is still unknown). Moreover, a two-liter engine will be equipped with both a “normal” liftback and a rechargeable hybrid. There will also be an electric four-wheel drive (with a separate engine on the rear axle). But whether the versions of HEV and PHEV will have a different appearance (as it is now) is not specified.

The full-fledged premiere of the new generation Toyota Prius will be celebrated on November 16th.
